Read: Begin by reading the parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. As you read the story, focus on the themes of preparedness, the uncertainty of the future and faithfulness. Notice how Christ highlights the great unknown of the future and how he views both the prepared and the unprepared.

Reflect: There are certain things in life that cannot be obtained at the last minute. One can’t begin studying for a test 5 minutes prior to the exam and expect to pass. There are also certain things in life that cannot be borrowed. A person can’t ask another to lend him some of their integrity. Here we see two contrasting groups of bridesmaids. One group that faithfully prepares for the eventual and the other group of bridesmaids who ignore it.  We have no way of knowing what the next day or perhaps even the next hour might bring. What we do know is this; life, as we know it, will come to an end. Our lives on earth will end as surely as the bridegroom in the story has returned. We just don’t know when. Jesus issues a warning. Be prepared. There is no way to cram at the last minute or borrow what is necessary to pass this ultimate test. The conclusion to the story Jesus tells is that our lives, will end far sooner than we think and at that point we will either be with Him or not. There is no other option. We have either prepared our hearts to be with him forever, or we have not.

How does this parable change your perspective on time? Can you sense the urgent panic among the bridesmaids that were unprepared upon the arrival of the Bridegroom? What does that look like today? Do you see this or have you experienced it in your own life?

Respond: There is a sense of urgency to this parable. Jesus was motivated to tell this to elicit a response designed to change the listener’s eternity. Which of these two groups does your relationship with Christ reflect? Regardless of your current spiritual maturity, Christ seeks our daily commitment and growth.

How can you be prepared? What can you do, this week, to intentionally spend time with Jesus and fill your lamps for His return?
