Week 6: July 13
The Rich Fool (Luke 12: 13-21)
by Brian Benoit
Read: Go back and read the Parable of the Rich Fool again, but this time, read the encouraging (and difficult!) advice that Jesus follows up with in verses 22-34. Imagine you are a person in the crowd, who lived in a culture that was far less abundant than ours does today. How might you have responded to Jesus’ words?
Reflect: When I read this parable, I have to admit that it’s hard to not read it through the filter of my American culture. I am constantly bombarded with messages about money, and it’s easy for me to adopt these attitudes and beliefs about money without even thinking about it.
How would you say that the average American might respond to the Rich Man’s attitude and actions?
What would the average American say about the words of Jesus in verses 22-34?
How do you hear the words of Jesus in verses 30 and 31? What does it mean to “seek the Kingdom”?
Respond: Generosity is a difficult subject. When it comes up, it is easy to feel attacked (They’re saying I’m not generous enough!), or like the person talking about generosity is doing it with their hand out, expecting something (Be generous here, and in this way). If we feel like either of these things are happening, it is very easy to get defensive, and dismiss the idea entirely. I get it.
As you approach this week’s activity, be aware of those two things - and don’t let them keep you from thinking about this difficult subject.
Often, generosity is divided into three categories:
Time - volunteering our time, and prioritizing opportunities to serve others
Talents - giving our expertise to others, and looking for ways to use our unique skills
Treasure - giving our money and other material possessions
Think back over the past year. What are some ways you have been generous in any of these categories?
Of these three categories, which one feels like the most of a stretch right now?
Which one feels “do-able”?
Now, spend some time in silence, listening to God. Ask Him to show you which category or categories He wants to grow you in your generosity. Be aware of whether He is asking you to stretch or simply become more comfortable with giving. Be aware of any specific opportunities He may be bringing to your mind. When you are done, make a specific plan as to how and where you will be more generous in the coming year.
